The Alberta College of Aeronautics (ACA) is an accredited post-secondary institution and Flight Training Unit with our own AMO and a focus on collegiate-level aviation education. The college operates a modern fleet of brand new DA20s, DA42 aircraft and ALSIM ALX simulator plus classic Cessna C172 trainers to take training to the next level.
The Aircraft Maintenance Department is a Transport Canada approved AMO responsible for the maintenance of school’s fleet of aircraft, ensuring safe and reliable operation in the training environment. Functions of the department include; scheduled maintenance, repairs, modifications & upgrading of equipment to enhance the flight training environment. The maintenance department has a parts facility to support all maintenance activities and helps to minimize downtime by maintaining sufficient stock levels sourced from approved suppliers.
The role of the AME Apprentice is to complete tasks assigned by the Director of Maintenance in accordance to the company Maintenance Policy Manual (MPM). The candidate for this role is expected to work under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance and will operate as part of a team and independently as required. Due to the nature of flight operations, maintenance priorities may change and the AME Apprentice must be able to adapt accordingly. A basic aviation tool set meeting industry standards is necessary; specialized tooling, supplies and safety equipment will be provided by the AMO. A basic knowledge of general aviation aircraft types and their respective characteristics is considered an asset and enthusiastic approach for learning will be essential for the AME candidate’s development.

Duties applicable to the role:
  • Maintain aircraft in accordance with applicable airworthiness standards.
  • Carry out maintenance, repair, and inspection of company aircraft
  • Ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Comply with company safety policy and conduct safe work practices.
  • Complete work reports and AME logbook per company policy.
  • Report and answer to the Director of Maintenance.

Qualifications Required
  • Graduate of a two-year AME diploma program from an Approved Training Organization (ATO) listed by Transport Canada
  • Basic computer skills
  • Able to legally work in Canada
  • Relocate (as required) and commute to CEZ3 Airport (Edmonton/Sherwood Park)

The Flight Operations department is a Transport Canada approved FTU responsible for the flight training of students, ensuring safe and reliable operation in the training environment. Functions of the department include the ground and flight training of students in accordance with company Flight Training Manual and the TC Flight Instructor Guide, scheduling of student training sessions, assignment of training equipment/resources, documentation of student progress and ensuring students’ safety in training in adherence to company Operations Manual.
This scholarship program for Class 4 Flight Instructors will provide a complete licensing and training course for successful candidates to receive their Flight Instructor Rating via grant program from April to August 2024. Candidates for this role are required to hold a Commercial Pilot License and a valid Cat 1 Medical. A Group 1 IFR rating and an enthusiastic approach to learning will be an asset for the candidate’s development.
Candidates are expected to attend classes a minimum of 3 days per week and complete a significant amount of self-study, lesson planning and examination preparation to successfully pass the requirements to become a flight instructor within the program period. All candidates will receive a conditional job offer at the college as a Class 4 Flight Instructor, conditional on successfully acquiring the Class 4 Flight Instructor Rating within the program duration. Upon receiving their Flight Instructor Rating, candidates will graduate to a paid Flight Instructor position within the college.

The college operates a modern fleet of new Diamond aircraft, including DA20s, a DA42, as well as an ALSIM ALX simulator in addition to classic Cessna C172 trainers.
The Academic department is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the College Program. Key functions of the department include: leading academic program quality, teaching and learning; ensuring communication and cooperation between the academic, flight operations and maintenance department, as well as developing and utilizing Quality Review processes. Primary department goals are to effectively deliver and continuously develop the highest level of aviation programing and to ensure compliance with Federal and Provincial collegiate and flight training requirements.
The role of the Manger of Program Review answers to the Dean of the College and supports the institution in Program Quality and Quality Assurance. Primary tasks will comprise of developing QA policies and processes to ensure current and future programs remain in compliance with Ministry and Alberta Education requirements and receive ongoing improvement. This role may also involve creating academic plans that align with institutional strategy, implementation of plans, and analyzing data and results to refine and adjust future strategy.

Duties applicable to the role:
  • Coordinate faculty, academic staff, and corporate administration teams to complete program reviews.
  • Support curriculum revisions and development at all credential levels based on Transport Canada and/or Alberta Education requirements
  • Ensure program compatibility with existing curriculum standards, and alignment with regulatory, licensing, and accreditation bodies’ expectations and requirements
  • Develop curriculum mapping resources and support program areas to meet internal and external requirements, as required.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal staff and government agencies. This includes developing internal documents and resources and maintaining websites to ensure currency and accuracy.
  • Contribute to the writing, analyses, and edits of program-quality written reports and documents for completeness, accuracy and alignment with internal and external requirements.

– Students will complete the Transport Canada Private Pilot (Integrated) skill requirements and obtain a Private Pilot’s license.

– Students will learn how to correctly search and interpret the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), and how it applies to flight operations.

– Students will understand how human factors affect flight safety and apply good pilot decision-making skills on the ground and in-flight.

– Students will understand the effects of weather and atmosphere on aircraft operations.

– Students should be able interpret NavCanada weather products and identify the hazards of operating in adverse weather conditions such as icing, turbulence and thunderstorms

– Students will understand the theory and methodology of VFR Flight Planning.

– Students will effectively utilize aeronautical maps and charts and apply their knowledge to plan their own VFR flight routes, navigation logs and ICAO flight plans

– Students will be able to explain aircraft components and systems, and how to prevent and compensate for in-flight failures and emergencies

– Students will understand the function and use of flight instruments, including Radio Navigation Aids, GPS and autopilot

– Students will understand the theory of flight exercises and how aerodynamics apply to aircraft performance

– Students will be able to explain and apply legal and practical requirements for flight, as well as understand the effects of various environmental conditions on flight performance.

– Students will understand and apply the mathematical skills and techniques for the safe operation of aircraft in all phases of flight

– Students will understand the properties of the physical forces that affect aircraft in all phases of flight.

– Students will complete the Transport Canada ground and flight requirements and obtain a Night Rating

– Students will learn about advanced illusions and Human Factors applicable to flights at night

– This course focuses on the navigational aspects of aircraft operations.

– Students will complete Transport Canada cross-country flight training requirements required to hold a Commercial Pilot’s license

– Students will learn the applicable Canadian Aviation Regulations which apply to Commercial Aviation Operations

– Students will complete Transport Canada cross-country flight training requirements required to hold an Instrument Rating

– Students will apply Radio Navigation and GNSS/GPS cross country flying techniques.

– Students will analyze past aviation incidents and accidents, determining the impact and underlying root causes of human and pilot decision making errors

– Students will evaluate various flight scenarios and identify risks and safety hazards that may affect safe operations using practical scenarios.

– Students will understand the principles of multi-engine aerodynamics, minimum controllable airspeed, and systems commonly found on multi-engine aircraft

– Students will learn the Transport Canada Regulations and Standards pertinent to flying multi engine aircraft in instrument conditions

– Students will learn aircraft systems for a specific advanced multi engine aircraft.

– Students will complete simulator training towards the completion of a multi-engine and instrument rating in accordance with Transport Canada requirements

– Students will learn standard operating procedures and cockpit callouts in a two-crew environment.

– Students will learn crew resource management techniques and safety management systems.

– Students will work together in pairs to successfully complete IFR flight training in a two-crew simulator.

– Students will apply crew resource management techniques and safety management systems.

– Students will complete the Transport Canada Commercial Pilot (Integrated) skill requirements and obtain a Commercial Pilot’s license

– Students will complete the Transport Canada Multi Engine (Integrated) skill requirements and obtain a Multi-Engine Rating

– Students will complete the Transport Canada Instrument Rating (Integrated) skill requirements and obtain an Instrument Rating.
